Unleashing the Power of Servant Leadership

Becoming an Influential Leader by Serving Others

There are many leadership styles, but one of the most powerful is servant leadership. In this post, we explore three questions to become more influential leaders.

What is Servant Leadership?

Servant leadership can be summed up in the following quote by C.S. Lewis on humility: “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less.” This also sums up what servant leadership is all about. It is when the leader serves others by seeing the best in them and calling out their greatest potential.

Who is Our Most Outstanding Example?

The most outstanding example of servant leadership is Jesus! In the Gospel of Luke, we read: “I did not come to be served but to serve and give my life as a ransom for many.” Jesus deserved to be served, but instead, he chose to serve others and take the posture of serving before being served. He wanted his followers to have the same posture. When the disciples asked him who was the greatest among them, he explained that the greatest is found in the person who chooses to be least among them or the one who chooses to serve above being served.

How Do We Become Servant Leaders?

Servant leadership takes more skill than it sounds, as most people struggle with their ego and often think about themselves or how others can help them. It takes practice and discipline to lead maturely and recognise the joy of serving others and helping them be great.

Servant leadership is a powerful tool for anyone in a leadership position, and it is an excellent way to build strong relationships with the people around you. If you aspire to be a great leader, consider adopting the principles of servant leadership in your life and work.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, servant leadership is an effective leadership style that focuses on serving others and helping them reach their full potential. By following the example of Jesus and adopting the principles of servant leadership, we can become more influential leaders and build stronger relationships with those around us. So, let's strive to be servant leaders and positively impact the world around us.

Three Things You Can Do

  1. Practice self-awareness and recognise when your ego is getting in the way of serving others.

  2. Look for opportunities to serve others, whether it's through mentoring, volunteering, or simply listening and offering support.

  3. Continuously educate yourself on the principles of servant leadership and how to apply them in your personal and professional life.
